THE GREAT INFLUENCERS PART DEUX

29 April 2010

you know when design is so good that you take it for granted? well that is exactly how i feel about SAUL BASS, the man responsible for the unforgettable imagery that goes with most of the hitchcock films- the unforgettable vertigo poster! he makes the most out of color and gestural line so that the empty space around the design matters almost more than the imagery. the whimsical childlike markings and line work speak volumes without hitting you over the head with what it's all about. i love saul bass!

THE GREAT INFLUENCERS

the late 50s and 60s graphic design has been one of the major influences on my own work. a few years ago, todd oldham brought to light the amazing work of charley harper. charley harper brought a modernist twist to his depictions of nature and wildlife capturing it at its whimsical minimal best. the color fields and line work seem so simple but say so much.

today it is grey in brooklyn, making me long for fall even though i have a ways to go. so i thought it would be a good time to post some of these last autumn/winter 2010 images that i find inspiring. this color palette keeps sneaking up in all of the things i am making right now.

I CAN'T HELP IT

11 April 2010

i try to not pay attention to people and things, but i can't help but feel a kinship with alexa chung's style. she's at once a tomboy and feminine. i never see a photo of her and think she's totally faking her style. she's pretty spot on in my book.

SO SMART SO RIGHT- WHUCK?

i had my apprehensions about seeing date night, the new movie starring tina fey and steve carell, and i am not sure why. i can't even explain my love for tina fey. half the time she says jokes that i say to my friends and the other half of the time she says joke i wish i said to my friends. her take on social commentary is spot on the tops. i think she could be one of the smartest, funniest women around. having said that, i saw date night on friday and i laughed pretty much throughout the whole movie. can't wait to see it again and catch all the subtleties that fey brings to the table. oh yea, she also does some of her amazingly awkward dance moves that make it even greater.

A CHLOE GIRL

03 April 2010

every time i see a new collection by hannah macgibbon for CHLOE my heart skips a little beat. beautiful fabrics, a sense of whimsy, a sense of romance and a dash of nostalgia equal all the things i love about getting dressed everyday. she hasn't failed to disappoint me yet!
